Encouraging art to collide with fashion and costumery, the 2019 Australian Wearable Art Festival is now calling all artists and fashion designers to submit an Expression of Interest to be a part of this year’s event on Friday 24 May in Eumundi on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

A visually spectacular parade will showcase over 60 wearable works of art and event curator, Wendy Roe said that festival organisers and judges are looking forward to seeing how artist’s imaginations translate into this year’s creations.

“This event has received overwhelming support from the creative community and this year we have a much larger event with competition entries being sought from across the nation,” Ms Roe said.

“It is where Gaultier meets Picasso and everything in between.”

“The Australian Wearable Art Festival is delighted to provide a platform here in Australia for artists and designers to embrace their creative exploration into form, structure, texture and colour using an eclectic mix of often unusual materials.

“The festival is now seeking submissions from artists and designers interested in being part of the festival, with prizes on offer for each category and sub-category.”

The Australian Wearable Art Festival will have four main categories as part of its gala parade competition this year – Avant Garde, Floriana, Trashion and Sustainable – as well as additional prizes for Haute-Couture, Headpiece, First Nation and best tertiary and secondary student pieces.

Award-winning artist Dr Jandamarra Cadd will join special guest judges Peter Dwyer of the Whitehouse Design Institute and Cindy Vogels, milliner and designer to the stars, on the judging panel.

Dr Cadd said that he is excited to see the artists and designers’ visions come to life using a variety of materials and techniques.

“Whether it’s through our hands, with our bodies, with our words or what we wear, I believe it is an integral part of our sense of well-being and individuality to express ourselves creatively,” Dr Cadd said.

After entries close, the judging panel will convene to evaluate entries and finalists will be notified on 29 March 2019.

Finalists’ wearable pieces of art will be presented on the catwalk in Eumundi under the stars on Friday 24 May, 2019.
