Gymnastics Queensland celebrated record participant numbers at their Annual Awards Dinner on Saturday night at the Pullman Brisbane.

More than 300 representatives from gymnastics clubs across Queensland attended the gala event where individuals and clubs were recognised and celebrated for their contribution to the sport.

Gymnastics Queensland Chief Executive Officer Kym Dowdell said the awards dinner was a key event on the organisation’s calendar and an opportunity to identify the outstanding performances of clubs, athletes, coaches, judges and volunteers across all gymsports.

“Our Annual Awards Dinner is an evening where we not only acknowledge clubs modelling best practice and innovation but where we celebrate our affiliated clubs, members and athletes for their commitment to and development of gymnastics throughout the previous year,” Ms Dowdell said.

“Our clubs and members worked incredibly hard in 2018 and it is due to their hard work we can proudly say we have just short of 55,000 athletes across the state, which is a new record for gymnastics in Queensland.”

Club of the Year was awarded to Delta Gymnastics Brisbane (located at Clayfield and Albion), after obtaining a variety of successes including achieving a milestone 3,000 members, winning National Club Champion, winning 25 national medals and having 18 athletes included in the Queensland state team.

A large part of the success of gymnastics in Queensland is due to the hard work and dedication from volunteers at all levels of the sport.

Recognising individuals who have volunteered their time, the 2018 Individual Service Award was presented to Jamie Cannon from Brisbane Grammar School gymnastics club.

Mr Cannon was acknowledged for his service to the gymnastics in Queensland, including over a decade serving as Chairperson of Men’s Artistic Gymnastics (MAG) Sport Committee.

“Gymnastics Queensland congratulates all those finalists and award winners and we look forward to another strong year of gymnastics in 2019,” Ms Dowdell said.
