With over 30 private galleries located in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, it is no wonder acclaimed international artist Katherine Wood has seized the opportunity to open her first Australian gallery in Montville.

Located in the iconic Montrose Waterwheel building, Katherine Wood Fine Art will officially open its doors on 22 November welcoming guests to view Katherine’s spectacular large-scale landscapes as well as local artists Rayma Eveson and Tara Spicer’s work and well-known South African artist Carrol Boyes’ functional artworks.

After travelling between her South African gallery for over 14 years and extensively exhibiting in London, Dubai, New York and Sydney, she is now pleased that her roots are firmly planted on the Sunshine Coast.

“With such a vibrant and supportive tourism industry and a flourishing arts scene, the Sunshine Coast provides the perfect opportunity for me to open my own signature Australian art gallery,” said Ms Wood.

“Montville has always been a wonderful creative hub for tourists but with a number of new galleries opening in the last year and the expansion of the Sunshine Coast Art Gallery Trail, I am attracted to the collaborative and supportive creative community that the Sunshine Coast offers.”

‘Creative tourism’ has been touted as the new ‘it’ offering for the tourism sector with 43% of all international visitors to Australia in 2017 participating in a cultural activity and cultural and heritage segments having grown 7.5% and 11.2% respectively over the past four years.[i]

“There is a definite trend worldwide to seek out more bespoke cultural offerings when travelling and Montville provides a complete cultural experience for people – strolling through galleries that offer sculptural works, photographs, prints and paintings, eating at beautiful restaurants and then shopping at boutique fashion retailers – all with a spectacular view,” said Ms Wood.

Ms Wood’s work has a universal appeal with bold and emotive landscapes commanding her new gallery space.

“I take inspiration from my surrounds and creating these artworks on the Sunshine Coast means there are a number of beachscapes,” said Ms Wood.

“Within these landscapes I attempt to comment on how we as the viewer are relatively insignificant in the greater picture of life and we are just a metamorphosis of energy, which I symbolize through including a signature man or tree in the work.”

“I encourage everyone to visit the gallery and support the wonderful local creatives working on the Coast.”

Katherine Wood Gallery is located right in the heart of Montville at 1/180 Main Street and is open between 10am – 4pm. To find out more about the gallery visit www.katherinewood.com
