Gymnastics Queensland congratulates Queensland gymnasts’ performances at World Cup Gymnastics

Five Queensland gymnasts have done themselves, Queensland and their country proud at the World Cup Gymnastics event held in Melbourne from 21 to 24 February 2019.

Heath Thorpe, Mitchell Morgans, Michael Tone, Georgia Rose-Brown and Kate Sayer were selected to represent Australia at the event and achieved exceptional results against the best gymnasts in the world.

Gymnastics Queensland Chief Executive Officer Kym Dowdell congratulated the gymnasts on their outstanding performances.

“These gymnasts are phenomenal athletes and outstanding role models for the almost 55,000 Queenslanders participating in gymnastics,” Ms Dowdell said.

“Their results are a testament to their hard work and dedication in what is a demanding sport at the elite level.”

Commonwealth Games athlete Georgia Rose-Brown equalled her 2018 World Cup Gymnastics result, winning the Bronze medal in Uneven Bars with a score of 13.366.

Fellow Queensland High Performance Centre gymnast Kate Sayer performed well in her first international competition as a senior gymnast, placing 10th in the qualifying round of Floor, narrowly missing a place in the finals.

National Centre for Excellence gymnast Mitchell Morgans qualified for the finals on both Parallel Bars and High Bar, achieving 4th place for both events in the finals.

Michael Tone competed in the qualification rounds in Pommel Horse and Rings placing 16th on Pommel Horse with a score 11.600 and 15th on Rings with a score of 12.100.

Having had surgery to remove screws from his elbow just eight weeks prior to the World Cup, 18-year-old Heath Thorpe was awarded 22nd place on his chosen apparatus Floor, with a score of 12.633.

The World Cup Gymnastics event sees athletes from across the world compete across two days of Qualifications, with the top eight athletes on each apparatus advancing to the Finals.

The Melbourne event is the Australian leg of the International Gymnastics Federation’s (FIG) Individual Apparatus World Cup Series, with the 2019 and 2020 events serving as qualifying events for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
