Each year, Australians spend more than $500 million on bottled water and with temperatures set to soar over the Christmas holidays, more and more people will be reaching for plastic bottles of water to quench their thirst.
Sadly, the majority of these plastic bottles will end up in landfill or polluting our waterways, with only a small percentage being recycled.
To generate awareness about this serious environmental issue and to help keep waterways in the Noosa region cleaner, Noosa Civic shopping centre will again be raising money and awareness for the Noosa Integrated Catchment Association (NICA) this Christmas period.
Centre Manager Monica Lord said that this year, Noosa Civic shopping centre’s annual #KeepNoosaBeautiful campaign will focus on replacing disposable plastic water bottles with a more sustainable, reusable bottle to help protect the local environment.
“Each year, 370 million plastic water bottles end up in landfill in Australia, with hundreds of thousands more ending up in our waterways, so we wanted to raise awareness and raise funds to help address the devastating impact this has on our natural environment,” Ms Lord said.
“From 3 December shoppers will be able to purchase a reusable drink bottle valued at $29.99 for just $5 when they visit NICA’s Christmas pop-up booth within the centre, with all funds raised supporting the clean-up of Noosa’s waterways.”
“The bottles feature beautiful artwork from local artist Cass Deller and there are limited numbers of the 500ml bottles so we urge people to get in early to show their support.”
“We also currently have a magnificent Pelican Tree installation in the centre and each time someone uploads a photo of the tree to Instagram and uses the #KeepNoosaBeautiful hashtag, we will donate $1 to NICA.”
“The Pelican Tree is an impressive seven metres tall statue featuring nearly 600 individually sculpted and hand painted pelicans and is quite a sight to see. It serves as a good reminder of these magnificent birds that are so heavily impacted by litter in our waterways.”
NICA Chair Bruce Hallett said the organisation was thrilled to be getting behind such a positive environmental initiative and raising awareness of the dangers plastic drink bottles pose to the natural environment.
“Every year our staff and volunteers pull hundreds of plastic water bottles from our waterways as part of our River Ranger program,” Mr Hallett said.
“These bottles are not only an eyesore to our beautiful environment but have a significant impact on the health of the waterway.”
“The #KeepNoosaBeautiful campaign is a great reminder for people to reduce their use of plastic drinking bottles. In a first-world country where we are able to drink the tap-water, carrying one of these beautiful water bottles should be something to be proud of and we congratulate those who make the effort to do so.”
