Rhythmic gymnasts raring to go on Gold Coast

July 14, 2016

More than 100 gymnasts from across South East Queensland are gearing up to twirl, leap and pivot their way to a place on the podium at this weekend’s 2016 Rhythmic Gymnastics Challenge 1, being held at Marymount College in Burleigh Waters on 16 July.

Gymnastics Queensland Chief Executive Officer Kym Dowdell said seven clubs from the Gold Coast, Tweed Heads, Sunshine Coast and Brisbane would participate in the event, with rhythmic gymnasts aged between six and 18 years demonstrating their skills.

“Entrants will compete both individually and in groups, using ropes, hoops, balls and ribbons to impress the judges,” Ms Dowdell said.

“This discipline of gymnastics is very popular with spectators as the intricate routines are visually spectacular and highlight gymnasts’ strength, flexibility and precision.”

Ms Dowdell said clubs registered to participate in the event included host club Elite Rhythmic Gymnastics Club, as well as Premier Gymnastics Academy, PCYC Elegance, Aspire Gymnastics Academy, Jimboomba Gymnastics, Amethyst Rhythmic Gymnastics Club and PCYC Tweed Heads.

“Each club contributes a range of skilled gymnasts to the competition and we look forward to seeing the high calibre routines delivered on Saturday.”

“This event enables gymnasts to qualify for the Rhythmic Gymnastics State Championships taking place in Carrara next month, so I have no doubt the competition will be strong.”

The Rhythmic Gymnastics Challenge 1 will be held at Marymount College, 261/285 Burleigh Connection Road, Burleigh Waters on Saturday, 16 July, with tickets available at the door. For further details, please visit www.gymqld.org.au or call (07) 3036 5607.
