If anyone knows the power of social media, it’s Ashton Wood.

The Sunshine Coast local is best known for his viral ‘Destroy My Jeep’ crusade, which saw Mr Wood crowd-fund the destruction of his faulty $49,000 Jeep Cherokee, and shine the spotlight on the need for consumer protection laws forcing car manufacturers to replace or refund ‘lemon’ vehicles.

Mr Wood said he would use his story as a case study at an upcoming Kawana Chamber of Commerce business breakfast on Wednesday, 6 September, highlighting the strength of social media as well as the importance of businesses protecting their brand online.

“My own personal experience with ‘Destroy My Jeep’ has shown just how much influence you can have via social media, with Queensland Attorney-General Yvette D’Ath confirming this week that consumer law reform will now be placed on the national agenda to protect consumers Australia-wide,” Mr Wood said.

“One of the most common oversights businesspeople make online is failing to listen to their customers, which can have a detrimental impact on their brand and bottom line.”

“My presentation will offer practical tips for protecting your business’ reputation, and cover the simple mistakes many businesses make when it comes to their social media presence.”

“If your product and services are good, social media can be your best friend. If they’re not, it will fast become your worst enemy.”

Kawana Chamber of Commerce President Linda Delamotte said those in attendance would have the opportunity to ask questions of Mr Wood at the event, which will be held at the Brightwater Hotel in Mountain Creek.

“As an experienced social media coach for small-to-medium-size organisations, Ashton is well-versed in running successful social media campaigns and brings a wealth of knowledge to the table,” Ms Delamotte said.

“This session is designed to be both engaging and informative, allowing attendees to apply the learnings to their own business or organisation.”

“In addition to Ashton’s presentation, we will also hear from a Telstra Business Centre Sunshine Coast representative, who will deliver an update on the progress of the Sunshine Coast nbn rollout, including the proposed decommissioning dates for the old network.”

“The first closures on the Sunshine Coast are scheduled for the Wurtulla area in November this year, with other Kawana suburbs following in early 2018.”

Ms Delamotte said the event was open to both Kawana Chamber of Commerce members and the broader business community, and she encouraged anyone seeking a greater understanding regarding social media to attend.

“The event offers an opportunity to not only acquire new information, but also network with other business owners and operators over a hot breakfast.”

The Kawana Chamber of Commerce Biz Breakfast will be held from 7.00am on Wednesday, 6 September at the Brightwater Hotel, 15 Freshwater Street, Mountain Creek. Tickets cost $38 for members and $45 for non-members, and can be purchased online at www.kawanachamber.com.au.
